lyrics

Mac’s General Store
(G. Rogers and J. Sule)

It stood in the town in pride of place
And carried an air of age-old grace
Everyone shopped at Mac’s General Store
Where you’d find all you need - and something more
Some blame it on the new-fangled mall
That caused Mac’s fortunes to take a fall
But some folk know the inside story
Of how that shop lost its former glory

You could buy anything in Mac’s General Store
But now no-one goes there – not anymore

That store was Mac’s for generations
But young John Mac brought alterations
He married a woman who found it a bore, said
“there’s more to life than - this general store!”
Kate wanted Mac to sell up and move
Nothing left now for the family to prove
In the big city, there’s wealth to be found
Mac disagreed and stood his own ground.

Some of us heard the rows late at night
But none had witnessed their last angry fight
All that we know is Kate disappeared
And Mac’s good name was doubted and smeared
He said she’d gone to live with another
And this was confirmed by his aging mother
The feeling amongst the folk living here
Was Kate hadn't left – she was holed up in there.

The store felt different when Kate had gone
Had an evil presence of something wrong
And under the mat was a faint red stain
That someone had scrubbed again and again
The facts were too scarce to point the finger
But none who shopped there would want to linger
Dust settled on the shelves of Mac’s store
And on the life that flourished before.

about

Both Sides of the Line Dunedin, New Zealand

Both Sides of the Line's cd, Sideshow, is " a record chock full of slinky country tunes, built upon 21st Century ‘adult contemporary’ bones. Digging a little beneath the surface you will find cooing swing come-ons here (Magical Man), fleeting touches of Americana there (Macs General Store), rockabilly beats and soft rock tendencies throughout."
